Tooth Decay in Children
“Caries control” is a dental term that means controlling the development of dental decay, or cavities. Controlling decay in babies and children is crucial to their overall dental health and is often our focus for our younger patients.
Once your child has teeth they are susceptible to tooth decay. One of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay in babies is to clean teeth regularly.
This helps remove bacteria and prevents sugar from remaining trapped in the tooth and gum area. If your baby has no teeth, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe their gums after feeding.
Water is the best choice between meals and at night. If your baby is used to sleeping with a bottle, try water instead after their regular feeding. This will help reduce to reduce the exposure to decay producing acids.
Your Child’s First Appointment
We recommend that your child visits the dentist for the first time at the age of 3.
Thereafter, we usually recommend that children have a professional check-up and cleaning every six months. However, every patient is different and some patients may require more frequent check-ups or cleanings.
During their first appointment we will do everything we can to ensure your child has a positive experience at our practice.
This includes chair “rides” for our young, impressionable patients. We will also teach you and your child the best practices for oral hygiene at home.

Teeth whitening
A change of just two or three shades can make a noticeable difference in almost anyone’s smile. There are a number of tooth whitening options to consider including in-office bleaching, at-home bleaching and whitening products sold over the counter
In the past, the higher bleach concentrations used in-office treatment resulted in more sensitivity. Today, however, bleaching gels are well buffered, making sensitivity less of an issue. Sensitivity may occur in people after whitening procedures, particularly when they eat hot or cold foods, but usually disappears after 48 hours and stops completely when treatment is stopped.
Dental implants
One of the most notable technological advances in dentistry has to be the development of dental implants. Dental implants offer an attractive and comfortable solution for those who have lost a tooth to decay or injury, providing a permanent replacement option that looks and feels like a real tooth. a dental implant feels and looks like a normal tooth, it can do wonders for a patient’s self-esteem. Dental implants also benefit general oral health since they do not have to be anchored to other teeth, like bridges.
Periodontal treatment
Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth. Plaque bacteria, acids and certain foods all contribute to the development of gum disease. More than 80 percent of Americans, for example, are living with periodontal or gum disease, which often goes undiagnosed. Patients with chronic gum conditions such as gingivitis or advanced periodontal disease have the highest risk for heart disease caused by poor oral health, particularly if it remains undiagnosed and unmanaged. Fortunately, two common methods exist to reverse the disease — dental scaling and root planning.
